Limescale and energy costs
With ever increasing energy prices that seem to be doing nothing but rising, a good place to start in saving your pennies, is looking at how much limescale costs you!
Many people wouldn’t think that limescale could be contributing to these costs, but did you know, it is estimated that for every millimetre of limescale on your elements/heat-exchanger your energy costs could be increased by 6-7% to create your hot water, so just imagine how much extra this is costing you as the scale builds up.
The reason it increases your energy costs is because the heat is insulated from the water it is trying to heat up to create your hot water. So if you are using a coil in the hot water tank, the coil gets hot and then the limescale needs to heat up so that the water can then heat up. So the amount of time it takes to reheat the cylinder after you have used a lot of the hot water increases.
Every time you use a little hot water, the coil needs to heat up and then the limescale and then the hot water. So this is even more inefficient than when you have used most of the hot water in the tank.
When you have limescale clogging up your system and appliances, they also have to work harder, this, in turn, uses more energy and increases your costs, without you even knowing! Limescale can also reduce heating efficiency by up to 12 percent.
